Australian Deputy PM meets Cuban Ambassador

Canberra, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles met with Cuban Ambassador Tanieris Dieguez in this capital on Thursday because of the end of her mission.

During the meeting at the Australian Federal Parliament, both sides discussed opportunities to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in areas such as education, health, biotechnology, and the mining sector.

Marles took the opportunity to send greetings to the Cuban people and wish the diplomat success in her future responsibilities.

Dieguez was also received recently by Australia’s Governor-General, Samantha Joy Mostyn, with whom she talked about the development of ties between the two countries and, in particular, cooperation experiences in education.

The Cuban diplomat highlighted the implementation in Australia, starting in 2012, of the Cuban literacy method “Yo Si Puedo” (Yes, I Can) in 13 Aboriginal communities in New South Wales, Queensland, and the Northern Territory, where more than 300 students have graduated.

She also held a meeting with Assistant Foreign Minister Matt Thistlethwaite, who received her along with officials from the Latin America division of the Australian Foreign Office due to the end of her mission.

Dieguez expressed her gratitude for Australia’s favorable stance in the recent United Nations vote against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against her country.
