Uruguay is seeking solutions to the housing emergency

Montevideo, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) The Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning (MVOT) is promoting short-term housing solutions for precarious situations.

This was announced by the head of the MVOT, Tamara Paseyro, before the Senate’s Joint Budget and Finance Committee.

She said that they will promote “flexible tools that allow for a quick and temporary response,” especially to “the most critical situations of socio-housing insecurity.”

Paseyro announced that the ministry is working on “the development of a bidding document that will allow private companies to submit proposals for easily assembled and transportable housing modules” to address the housing emergency.

The minister stated that there are 67,024 households in the country with at least one critical housing deficiency; for example, walls or roofs built with scrap materials and dirt floors.

She cited data from the 2023 census, which recorded the existence of more than 9,000 homes without a bathroom for exclusive use and a similar number without an adequate sanitation system.

There are 4,058 homes without electricity, and 2.7 percent of the population reported having had to abandon their homes in the last five years due to floods or storms.

Nationwide, 667 informal settlements or slums persist, he noted.

She stated that the government’s objective is to immediately improve the housing conditions of the most vulnerable families, while also ensuring continued progress toward more stable solutions.
