Syria denounces theft of valuable statues from National Museum

Damascus, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Ministry of Culture denounced the theft of several pieces from the National Museum of Damascus and issued a circular with detailed specifications of six missing statues for their location and recovery.

Among the stolen works are six sculptures of Venus, made of marble, alabaster, and plaster, which were part of the valuable collection displayed in the museum’s galleries.

According to official information, one of the pieces is a restored marble Venus with fractured feet; another is an incomplete figure carved in alabaster; and a third is a plaster statue representing a standing woman, considered a classic example of female sculpture.

The Ministry of Culture called on official and private institutions, both within and outside the country, to cooperate in the search for the works and provide any information that may contribute to their recovery, emphasizing that the protection of Syrian heritage is a national and collective responsibility.

According to the statement, this measure is part of a national plan aimed at documenting and safeguarding Syrian antiquities, as well as strengthening security in museums, with the goal of preserving the artistic and cultural expressions that bear witness to Syria’s millennia-long history.
