Minister announces closure of Francoist Foundations in Spain

Madrid, Nov 18 (Prensa Latina) Spain's Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, announced the start of preliminary steps for the dissolution of Francoist foundations.

Addressing the Congress of Deputies, Urtasun detailed that the José Antonio Primo de Rivera Foundation, the Blas Piñar Foundation, the private Ramón Serrano Suñer Foundation, and the Gonzalo Queipo de Llano Pro-Childhood Foundation will be closed gradually.

“A democratic government must demand, always and at all times, truth, reparation, and justice, and that is what we do and will continue to do, in accordance with the law,” he added.

In his remarks before the specialized committee of the Lower House, he also emphasized that “Spain is experiencing a brilliant cultural moment, in terms of creativity, certainly, but also in the consumption of culture.”

He explained that, in accordance with the provisions of the Democratic Memory Law, the dissolution of these four Francoist foundations will proceed, following the same path that began with the Francisco Franco National Foundation, currently in the appeals phase.

Urtasun detailed that it is a three-phase process. The first phase, the initiation of preliminary actions, which is now beginning, consists of requesting a report from the State Secretariat for Democratic Memory.

The second phase is the opening of the procedure, with the notification of the file to each foundation and the opening of the corresponding appeals period.

Finally, a report is requested from the State Attorney General’s Office, based on which the Ministry of Culture will decide whether to initiate legal proceedings for the dissolution of each of the foundations.

Lastly, the resolution of the procedure will be decided by the judicial authorities.
