During an event commemorating the Day of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy, the prime minister criticized the European Union’s (EU) lack of respect for the right of member states to pursue their own sovereign path.
Fico emphasized that this stance violates international law. The head of government noted that the internal opposition is waging an aggressive campaign against his party, the Directorate – Social Democracy, and stressed that the Slovak Constitution guarantees respect for diverse opinions in society.
Furthermore, Fico announced that he will push to reopen the investigation into the 2018 murder of journalist Ján Kuciak and denounced the case as having been opportunistically used to oust the previous Social Democratic government.
Political analysts agree that Slovakia’s stance reflects a growing trend in Europe that prioritizes energy security and the right to self-determination, and they emphasize the importance of dialogue in resolving differences.
The Slovak government’s position demonstrates a call for pragmatism and mutual respect among nations, principles aligned with international law, which contribute to stability and peaceful coexistence globally.
