Protests on Syrian coast demand decentralization (+Photos)

Damascus, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian coastal provinces of Tartus and Latakia, inhabited by the Alawite minority, saw protests and sit-ins today demanding administrative decentralization and the release of detainees, amid a large security deployment.

The demonstrations took place in various locations in the provincial capitals of Tartus, Latakia, and Homs, with residents from both rural and urban areas participating.

The participants chanted slogans against killings, demanded stronger administrative decentralization, and called for the release of detained former military personnel.

The Syrian state news agency SANA released images of the security forces deployment and asserted that the police presence was intended to protect citizens and public facilities.

The demonstrations were in response to a call issued by Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, president of the Alawite Supreme Islamic Council, who in a video message denounced what he called “sectarian score-settling” in the country and urged the adoption of solutions such as federalism and political decentralization to guarantee the rights of all communities, particularly the Alawite minority.
