The fire occurred in the Tai Po district of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and images released by the local press show at least four large buildings engulfed in flames.
The Tai Po District Office has opened two community halls as temporary shelters for those who need them.
In addition, the Hong Kong government sent buses to evacuate affected residents, according to local media reports.
