South African government reports million-dollar fiscal surplus

Pretoria, Nov 28 (Prensa Latina) The South African government recorded a surplus of approximately $571.9 million during the 2023/2024 fiscal year, revealed the national statistics agency, Stats SA.

The positive result, according to the agency’s report, adjusted for the average exchange rate recorded that fiscal year, was achieved despite a net negative cash flow from operating activities of $5.9278 billion.

According to the report, revenue from operating activities totaled $113.45 billion, while operating expenses reached $119.3778 billion.

On the other hand, transactions in non-financial assets generated a net outflow of $8.8256 billion, and the net acquisition of non-cash financial assets registered an outflow of $1.8395 billion.

According to Stats SA, the government sector offset these deficits through financing: the inflow of liabilities totaled $17.06 billion, resulting in a net cash inflow of $15.32 billion from financing activities for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024.

According to local experts, the functional analysis of spending reveals the South African government’s social investment priorities, with education, social protection, and health accounting for 47,1% of total expenditure.
