Meloni at Gulf Summit on Italy’s Greater Role in Middle East

Rome, Dec 4 (Prensa Latina) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed her country's commitment to strengthening political and economic ties with Middle Eastern countries at the 46th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, reports highlight on Thursday.

A statement published on the official website of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers indicates that during her Wednesday address at the regional forum, as the only European leader present, the prime minister announced her intention to host a GCC-Middle East Summit in Italy, bringing together countries from that region and the Mediterranean.

Meloni noted her country’s strategic interest in expanding economic interconnections and making Italy the gateway to Europe for the Persian Gulf countries, aimed at further boosting cooperation, which already amounts to 35 billion dollars annually.

She referred in particular to the launch of the India-Middle East Corridor, an infrastructure and economic project that will connect the main port cities of the South Asian nation with Europe and the United States through that region.

Meloni said this initiative “would allow our economies and businesses to unleash enormous potential, and, in it, Italy intends to play a leading role, for example, by having a crucial hub like Trieste, the northernmost port on the Mediterranean.”

The head of Government stated before the Arab leaders gathered at the forum, held at the Al Sakhir Palace in Manama, Bahrain, the need for greater stability in the Middle East region, for which, she said, we must work towards achieving a two-state solution, one for Palestinians and one for Israelis.
