El Salvador with significant progress in the country’s ports

San Salvador, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) El Salvador is making progress today as a major recipient of regional trade through its port development, said Luis Canto, general manager of the Pacific Port Union (UPDP), today.

Phase 1 is currently underway, which will triple container operations at the ports of Acajutla and La Union. The latter, which had previously received only one ship in 2024, is already handling 70 ships this year carrying cars, fertilizers, steel, and construction materials.

Canto, an engineer by profession, addressed the challenges of trade through the ports, which will allow for the reception of goods, fertilizers, and other supplies destined for Honduras and Nicaragua, among other countries.

He said, for example, that vehicles destined for El Salvador, as well as Honduras and Nicaragua, are already being received in La Union.

on.

The executive discussed the approved and upcoming investments that will allow for the expansion of the Port of Acajutla with a new pier costing $500 million.

This new pier will enable the port to handle approximately eight ships simultaneously and accommodate the largest vessels currently sailing the world’s oceans.

This development will help absorb and streamline trade in the region, as ports in Panama and Mexico are currently congested due to the number of waiting ships.
