Haitian government to help citizens return from Turkiye

Port-au-Prince, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) The Haitian government reaffirmed its commitment to helping its citizens who are struggling in Turkiye return home.

Ann-Kathryne Lassegue, Haiti’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, met with Turkish Ambassador Burak Akcapar to discuss the issue.

During the meeting, Lassegue expressed the Haitian government’s willingness to assist nationals who wish to return to the country, but noted that the support of Turkish authorities will be necessary to explore the required cooperation mechanisms.

In October 2024, Haitian migrants appealed to the country’s highest political leadership for assistance in returning home, describing their lives in Türkiye as disastrous.

They denounced the insecurity they face, being forced into hiding to avoid violence from Turkish security forces.

The migrants mentioned the slim chances of regularizing their immigration status, and those who manage to obtain a temporary residence permit must pay more than US$600 for a three-month period, a prohibitive cost.

The International Organization for Migration, in collaboration with the Haitian government, had already organized three flights, but the local press at the time offered no details about a fourth.
