Cuban President commemorates Battle of Alegria de Pio

Havana, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Diaz-Canel commemorated the Battle of Alegria de Pio, the first armed confrontation of the Granma expeditionaries and a symbol of the resumption of the revolutionary struggle in Cuba.

On social media, the president remembered the phrase of Commander Juan Almeida Bosque, “Here, no one surrenders,” uttered during the battle of December 5, 1956, and emphasized that this slogan remains the “hallmark of the Cuban Revolution.”

After the Granma yacht landed on December 2, 1956, near Playas Las Coloradas, in eastern Cuba, the expeditionaries had their baptism of fire at Alegria de Pio just three days later. T

This first battle ended in the defeat and dispersal of the troops; however, two weeks later the leaders of the Rebel Army met to continue the fight.
