Lula is being pressured to block reduced sentences for coup plotters

Brasilia, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) Allies of the Brazilian government are pressuring President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to block the sentencing bill, which could reduce the sentences for the coup attempts of January 8, 2023.

According to political analyst Pedro Venceslau of CNN Brasil, if there are modifications to the text to be debated in the Senate, compared to what was approved in the Chamber of Deputies, the recommendation from people close to the Executive branch amounts to a total veto.

Among those recommending such a stance is Marco Aurelio Carvalho, coordinator of the Prerogatives Group (progressive lawyers and intellectuals), which recently held an event honoring the former labor leader and other important figures of the current administration.

Lula’s advisors argue that if the bill’s content is softened to restrict benefits only to those involved in the January 8th events considered foot soldiers (participants without leadership roles), a total veto would be the best strategy.

This position is defended even knowing that the presidential veto would likely be overturned by the National Congress.

Venceslau maintains that this recommendation is related to the 2026 elections. He specifies that allies believe that if Lula does not veto the bill entirely, his political platform would be compromised in the next presidential race.
