Indonesia secures key benefits in tariff agreement with the US

Jakarta, Dec 23 (Prensa Latina) Indonesia announced that it has successfully finalized the details of a Reciprocal Tariff Agreement (RTA) with the United States, which is expected to be signed before February by the respective presidents, Prabowo Subianto and Donald Trump.

The Trump administration reduced tariffs on Indonesian products from 32 to 19 percent in July, and now final details are being added, such as granting advantages for key exports: palm oil, coffee, and tea, in order to strengthen Indonesia’s competitiveness in the North American market.

According to Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto, the agreement guarantees a framework of reciprocity that opens up greater trade opportunities for the nation with the fastest-growing economy in Southeast Asia.

In return, Indonesia will invest billions of dollars in the purchase of US energy, agricultural products, and aircraft, reinforcing bilateral cooperation.

The United States, for its part, hopes to expand its access to critical Indonesian minerals, essential for the technology and energy sectors.

Both countries will resume talks in January to resolve legal issues, with the expectation that the agreement will be officially signed in the coming weeks.
