Doumbouya declared winner of presidential elections in Guinea

Conakry, Dec 31 (Prensa Latina) Electoral authorities in Guinea declared the leader of the Military Junta, General Mamady Doumbouya, the winner of the presidential elections held in the country with 86,7% of the votes cast.

After centralizing, verifying, and compiling the provisional results of the first round of voting, I declare that Doumbouya reached an absolute majority in these elections, Djenabou Toure, director of the General Directorate of Elections, told the press.

According to the source, in the election where eight other candidates competed, Abdoulaye Balde, leader of the Democratic Front of Guinea party, came in second with 6,6% of the vote, while the remaining presidential hopefuls obtained lower percentages.

According to the digital news outlet Media Guinee, the election, in which 6.7 million voters participated, was held under a new constitution approved in a referendum last September.

The new constitution, among other things, revokes the ban on military leaders running for public office and extends the presidential term from five to seven years.

Doumbouya, head of the ruling military junta and who led a military coup in September 2021 that ousted then-President Alpha Condé, was considered the clear favorite to win the presidency of this African country.

According to the World Food Programme, in Guinea, despite its immense mineral wealth, including bauxite, more than 50% of its 15 million inhabitants live in poverty.
