Colombia’s Foreign Ministry rejects Trump’s threatening comments

Bogota, Jan 5 (Prensa Latina) The Colombian Foreign Ministry expressed its "strongest rejection" of the statements made by US President Donald Trump, in which he insinuated a possible attack on Colombia, similar to what he did with Venezuela.

The Foreign Ministry considered that Trump’s statements “disregard the fundamental principles governing relations between sovereign states and are incompatible with the respect due to Colombia’s democratic institutions.”

It also emphasized that any statement that attempts to discredit, directly or indirectly, the current president, who was democratically elected, is an undue interference in the country’s domestic affairs, contrary to international law.

The statement reads, “The Foreign Ministry warns that such statements contravene the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, particularly those of sovereign equality of States, non-intervention, and mutual respect, essential pillars of the international system established within the framework of the United Nations.”

It emphasized that Colombia is a democratic, sovereign State that respects international law and conducts its foreign policy autonomously, responsibly, and in accordance with its national interests.

The Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Colombian State’s unwavering willingness to maintain international relations based on dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect, and underscored that national sovereignty, the legitimacy of its institutions, and due respect for the head of State are inalienable principles.
