UN condemns US aggression against Venezuela

Geneva, Jan 6 (Prensa Latina) The United States' military intervention threatens Venezuela's sovereignty, the UN Charter, and international security, asserted Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, today.

In statements to the press, Shamdasani affirmed that, since the aggression perpetrated by Washington on January 3 (which included the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores), all states are less secure.

Furthermore, she considered that this action violates the norms of international law and the principle of the UN Charter that establishes that member states must not threaten or use force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any nation.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the multilateral organization, António Guterres, warned yesterday about the repercussions of what happened in the region and on relations between states.

“The maintenance of international peace and security depends on the continued commitment of all to adhere to all the provisions of the Charter,” he stated.

He also emphasized the importance of respecting the Charter in its entirety, all other applicable legal frameworks, and the political independence and territorial integrity of States.

For his part, Venezuela’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Samuel Moncada, demanded respect for his country’s sovereignty and the immediate release of Maduro and his wife.
