Salvadorans demand end to state of emergency

San Salvador, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Social, labor, and community organizations in El Salvador demanded an end to the state of emergency, the government's flagship policy in its fight against gangs.

In a thousands Salvadorans marched to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the signing of the Peace Accords, the end of the state of emergency, and respect for human rights, which the government allegedly violates.

The slogans and banners also called for due process for those detained under this measure, which they assert undermines democratic institutions, and for an end to unjustified dismissals in the health and education sectors.

Some signs also demanded the release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, who are being held by the United States, a country they also called upon to end its economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba.

Sonia Urrutia, representative of the Popular Resistance and Rebellion Bloc (BRP), which convened the peaceful protest, pointed out that the commemoration seeks to remember the fundamental principles of the peace agreements, such as the protection of human rights and the creation of institutions that serve the people.

Speaking to the press, the activist said that the country is facing a profound crisis due to the erosion of its democratic rights.

“There can be no peace with dignity if human rights are not respected, and as a social movement, we demand an end to the state of emergency that is causing so much harm to the poorest families in the country,” she emphasized.
