UNICEF prepares campaign to mitigate education crisis in Gaza

Ramallah, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is preparing a campaign to bring some 336,000 students back to the classroom in the Gaza Strip, where they have been out of school for more than two years due to the Israeli aggression.

UNICEF Spokesperson James Elder made this remark and affirmed that the halt in the education sector in the coastal enclave has put a generation of Palestinians at risk.

Sixty percent of school-age children in Gaza are currently not receiving in-person education, Elder said, and noted that 90 percent of schools have been damaged or destroyed.

The UNICEF official underscored that before this war, Palestinians in Gaza had one of the highest literacy rates in the world, and education was a source of pride, resilience, and progress for generations.

The Gaza Human Rights Center denounced last week the collapse of education in the territory due to the Israeli war campaign, which has caused widespread destruction of the sector’s infrastructure.

The non-governmental organization (NGO) accused in a statement the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of depriving hundreds of thousands of children and young people in the coastal enclave of their basic right to education.
