In a telephone conversation with Prensa Latina, the former Brazilian federal deputy stated that supporting Cuba is a duty for every democrat, for all those who defend the self-determination of peoples, and for all socialists.
Cuba represents a victory against imperialism and the struggle of the people, and has marked our generations, Genoino added after the US president signed an executive order declaring the Caribbean country a national emergency and announcing tariffs on those who supply it with oil.
According to the former leader of the Workers’ Party (PT), solidarity with Cuba means taking to the streets, pressuring progressive and center-left governments not to accept the US blockade, and also requires an internationalist demonstration of world public opinion to provide full support to the island nation.
Cuba must win, Genoino added, maintaining that this pressure from the United States, “an empire in crisis that is trying to stifle this fundamental symbol of democratic and socialist change,” cannot be accepted.
In his statements, he also expressed his support for the Venezuelan people and called for demands for the release of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Congresswoman Cilia Flores, who were kidnapped on January 3 during an attack ordered by Trump.
According to the former legislator, it is necessary to defend the fight against imperialism so that it moves away from Latin America, and to support the governments of Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, and Colombia in their confrontation with the violent and authoritarian pressure from the United States.
