Chile: US blockade against Cuba is a true collective punishment

Santiago, Chile, Feb 3 (Prensa Latina) Chile's Association of Relatives of Executed Politicians (AFEP) rejected the order signed by US President Donald Trump, aimed at tightening the US blockade currently in place against Cuba.

That economic, commercial, and financial siege affects women and men, girls and boys, and is a true collective punishment, the AFEP denounced in a statement sent to Prensa Latina.

The text remembered that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) approved, in October last year, for the 33rd time and by 165 votes in favor, a resolution calling for an end to this unilateral policy.

However, the US government persists in ignoring the international community’s will and continues to be responsible for the suffering endured by the Cuban people.

As relatives of victims of the civil-military dictatorship, we cannot remain silent about these practices to stifle the economy, which are also replicated in other contexts, such as Gaza, where blockades and deprivation generate hunger and death, affecting children in particular.

The AFEP expressed its concern regarding the executive order signed on January 29 by Trump, which describes Cuba as a threat to his country’s national security and announces the imposition of tariffs on those nations that supply it with oil.

Chaired by Alicia Lira, the organization demands that Washington put an end to the policy of sanctions, threats, and harassment against the Caribbean nation.
