Arevalo urges youth to participate in Guatemalan politics

Guatemala City, Feb. 6 (Prensa Latina) “We need young people to participate today, and that starts with voter registration,” stated Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo during a meeting with students at Rafael Landivar University.

“We have a very low rate of registered voters, preventing us from exercising our right to vote,” the president emphasized to university authorities, professors, and students.

During a session titled “Challenges and Opportunities for Young People in Democracy,” the head of state explained that the first opportunity to influence reality lies precisely in exercising the right to vote and elect authorities.

In this regard, he opined, this is not something the government should do alone, but rather something we must do as a society, as universities, and as civil society organizations.

“We should start promoting it today, not six months before the elections, and launch a youth voter registration campaign,” remarked the candidate for the Semilla Movement party.

We need more young people in politics, some who accept the challenge of participating, Arevalo insisted, adding that many have found a place in his group.

I hope it won’t be solely through our influence, but that they will revitalize the political system, “but for that, you have to participate and register to vote,” the sociologist asserted.
