OCHA suspends humanitarian operations in Ituri, DRC

Kinshasa, Feb 6 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced the suspension of humanitarian operations in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), due to fighting between armed groups.

In a statement released today, the agency indicated that clashes in the city of Bule and its surrounding areas have claimed the lives of at least two civilians and left several others wounded.

This resumption of violence continues to severely disrupt essential humanitarian operations, the statement said, explaining that it was necessary to halt scheduled food distributions.

“More than 78,000 displaced people in Bule and its surrounding areas have been unable to receive assistance since the beginning of December, leaving families with shortages of food, medical care, and drinking water,” the statement emphasized.

OCHA stressed that it is maintaining close contact with local authorities to try to adapt operations to the evolving situation.

“The UN reminds all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and ensure the safety of humanitarian personnel and resources.

We need safe, predictable, and unimpeded humanitarian access to prevent further deterioration of the situation,” it added.
