After meeting with activists and community leaders linked to the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), the intellectual pointed out that the Caribbean nation faces a crucial moment with the oil blockade imposed by Washington.
“There may be power outages, as there are, but what about the entire political project embraced by the Cuban people after years of tyranny under Fulgencio Batista (1952-1958), who turned the country into a brothel for the U.S. mafia?” he emphasized.
Regarding Cuba’s classification as a threat to U.S. security, Betto expressed his conviction that the greatest threat to global security, including the United States, is Donald Trump.
“That man is a born dictator; he fancies himself Hannibal, emperor of the world.” But history will teach him: he is wrong.” He cited historical examples of resistance against imperial forces, such as Vietnam, “a poor, peasant people who defeated the most powerful military force in human history,” he noted.
The author of the book, “Fidel and Religion,” added that this US administration will also fail to stifle the Cuban Revolution, which has become a “liberating political project.”
He also highlighted the growing international solidarity, expressed in mobilizations denouncing the US siege, as well as the collection and shipment of food and medicine to the island: “People are outraged by this arrogance of the United States, of Trump, in wanting to stifle the Cuban Revolution,” he concluded.
