Laos expects to receive five to six million foreign visitors

Vientiane, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) Improved regional connectivity and growing interest in cross-border rail travel should enable Laos to receive between five and six million international visitors this year, according to industry sources.

Up to two million travelers could come from China alone, driven by both the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the fact that this small nation is an emerging destination in Southeast Asia.

According to experts, Laos offers several advantages, including competitive travel costs, well-preserved natural landscapes, rich culture, and improved accessibility, primarily due to the opening of the railway that connects it directly to China.

Since it began operating in December 2021, the railway has transported approximately 12 million passengers within Laos and 62 million along the entire route, as well as roughly 16 million tons of freight domestically and 72 million tons along the entire line.

The country’s authorities, according to the KPL news agency, are seeking to expand connectivity through new rail links with Thailand and Vietnam, among others, while simultaneously advancing national development goals focused on green growth, industrial modernization, and digital transformation.

Laos closed 2025 with an 11 percent year-on-year increase in international visitor arrivals, totaling 4,580,709, as reported last week by the Tourism Development Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
