Many nations welcome Afghanistan-Pakistan temporary ceasefire

Kabul, Mar 19 (Prensa Latina) Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Syria, Jordan, and Kuwait welcomed the announcement of a temporary ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the Pajhwok news agency reported on Thursday.

China also expressed this Thursday its support for the temporary agreement between the two neighboring nations and urged both sides to resume talks to achieve a lasting peace.

Zabihullah Mujahid, chief spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, announced on Wednesday evening that the security and defense forces had declared a temporary suspension of defensive operations (Radd-ul-Zulm) to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, at the request of the mediating Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Qatar.

Pakistan also confirmed the suspension of which it calls Operation Ghazab lil-Haq (Righteous Fury), coinciding with the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holiday, from Thursday to Monday.

However, it warned that in the event of any cross-border attack, drone strike, or any terrorist incident within Pakistan, “the operations” will resume immediately with renewed intensity, according to the online newspaper The News.

Hostilities between the two countries began in late February when Pakistan launched attacks on Afghanistan following actions along their shared border near Kabul, claiming it was in response to shelling within its territory.
