Diaz-Canel thanks Mexico and Sheinbaum for support of Cuba

Mexico City, Mar 27 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed his admiration and gratitude to Mexico and President Claudia Sheinbaum for their support of the Caribbean nation in an interview published by La Jornada newspaper.

The Cuban president underscored, “For the Mexican people, for the Mexican government, all our admiration, respect, affection, and commitment. And in particular for Claudia, the Mexican president, who has shown unwavering convictions, firm principles, courage, and gallantry.”

Diaz-Canel asserted that this nation and its president “have no idea how many Cubans would like to thank personally” the head of the Executive for everything she has done for Cuba during these times.

He said, “We have tremendous respect and admiration for her and her people. Thank you, Mexico! A thousand times, thank you for always standing by Cuba’s side in our nation’s most complex moments.”

The Cuban head of State stressed that this country “is the sister nation that has always stood by Cuba, in good and bad times,” and remembered that when the whole world turned its back on the island in the 1960s due to pressure from the United States, Mexico stood firm.

The Cuban president stated, “There is an essential fact. When Jose Marti lived in Mexico, at only 22 years old, he presented a work to the Mexican public named ‘Amor Con Amor Se Paga’ (Love is Paid with Love). I believe that in the title of that work lies the essence of our deep relationship.”

He highlighted the call from La Jornada and former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to support Cuba, the way in which governors and political figures have donated part of their monthly wages, and the mobilization of the Mexican people to collect and send aid to the Caribbean nation.

Diaz-Canel mentioned other international initiatives, such as the Our America Convoy, and underscored that Cuba is neither isolated nor alone.
