The resolution approved in this town, in the central region of Tuscany, denounces the “substantial naval blockade” imposed on January 29 by US President Donald Trump, with an executive order aimed at preventing fuel shipments to the island, thereby damaging its economy and causing suffering to the population.

The text highlights that Cuba has faced a criminal economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by Washington for more than 60 years, which is rejected every year by a large majority vote at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), reiterating the demand that this unilateral measure, which violates human rights, must cease.

The document remembers that “during the worst moment of the health crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the Republic of Cuba sent medical brigades to support our country,” and some 400 doctors from that nation are currently giving medical care in the southern region of Calabria.

It refers to solidarity initiatives, such as the European Convoy that recently traveled to Havana from Italy, as well as the “Energy for Life” campaign, launched by the Italy-Cuba Friendship Association (ANAIC), the Italian Association for Social Promotion (ARCI), National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI), and the Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL).

The text of this resolution, approved by the Poggibonsi City Council, was sent to Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella, the country’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the legislative leaders of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, Lorenzo Fontana and Ignazio LaRussa, respectively, among others.
