Spanish FM advocates for Cubans to decide their future

Madrid, Apr 6 (Prensa Latina) Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares advocated for Cubans to decide the island's future and reiterated his rejection of the US blockade.

Speaking on TVE’s “La Hora de la Uno” program, reported by Prensa Latina, Albares emphasized Spain’s stance of condemnation to the blockade that the United States has maintained against Cuba for more than six decades.

Addressing a wide range of international issues, the foreign minister reiterated that in all situations where “the law of the strongest is being imposed,” the situation in Cuba is particularly “painful” for Spain.

He expressed confidence that Spain’s stance against the economic siege against the Caribbean nation and its desire that the Cubans can decide their own future will ultimately prevail, as was the case with the recognition of Palestine and the condemnation of the war in Iran. He also praised the Spanish Government’s determination to send two packages of humanitarian aid, something that will continue as long as necessary, although it cannot resolve this situation alone, which has worsened in the last few weeks due to Washington’s ban on Venezuelan crude oil imports.

“What we want, of course, is to end this blockade and the Cuban people can decide their future freely,” the official said, and also opposed a possible US intervention aimed at regime change.

Albares took the opportunity to remember that when he received Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez during his international tour, he reiterated “the absolute rejection of the US blockade.”
