Italian and Iranian Foreign Ministers discuss Middle East crisis

Rome, May 3 (Prensa Latina) Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani spoke by telephone with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to discuss the current crisis in the Middle East, according to a statement .

During the call, Tajani expressed to Araghchi the Italian government’s deep concern about the escalating tensions in the region, a consequence of the war against Iran launched by the United States and Israel following the start of their attacks on that nation on February 28.

Both ministers assessed the serious consequences of the conflict, and in this regard, the Italian Foreign Minister reaffirmed his country’s commitment “to support and actively contribute to the efforts of the international community for peace, security, and stability in the Middle East” through diplomatic channels.

The Italian Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of preventing further escalation and restoring freedom of passage through the Strait of Hormuz. He reiterated to his Iranian counterpart Rome’s position on the prohibition of Tehran’s military use of nuclear weapons.

Tajani “noted that the development of a military nuclear program by Iran represents a red line for Italy, as it could trigger a dangerous nuclear arms race throughout the Middle East, with serious consequences for international security,” the document states.

During the conversation, both sides considered achieving a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon and a stable peace in the country a priority. As a result of Israeli attacks that began on March 2, more than 2,600 people have died and some 8,000 have been wounded, the source adds.
