Uruguay’s heartfelt concert for Cuba in Montevideo

Montevideo, May 14 (Prensa Latina) The iconic Afro-Uruguayan singer and activist Chabela Ramírez condemned what she described as a serious and terrible threat posed by the United States against Cuba.

She made these remarks exclusively to Prensa Latina on the eve of her participation in the concert: The concert stems from the current crisis in Cuba and reflects the sentiments of those of us in Uruguay who reject the threats and aggressions suffered by countries on the continent, she said.

She noted that these hostile policies from Washington also affect Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela. Therefore, she added, a group of Uruguayan singers came together to for Cuba.

“I am very pleased to participate in the concert, because I firmly believe that culture opens our eyes to blinding influences and reveals that another reality exists, the reality of the freedom of peoples,” she expressed. “We are going to sing with great hope and with all our hearts,” she said.

Isabel “Chabela” Ramirez is an Afro-Uruguayan musician and activist, a leading figure in candombe and Uruguayan carnival. In 2024, Montevideo City Council honored her by naming her an “Illustrious Daughter of Montevideo.”

“The era is giving birth to a heart—Uruguay sings for Cuba” will be a gesture of solidarity aimed at raising funds to address the hardships suffered by this nation resisting the US reinforced

blockade.
