Organizations to file lawsuit against Ecuador-US trade agreement

Quito, May 19 (Prensa Latina) Social organizations in Ecuador will file a petition at the Constitutional Court to declare the trade agreement signed with the United States unconstitutional, arguing that it compromises national sovereignty.

The legal action will be supported by the Ecuadorian Retirees Platform, the Ecuadorian Oil Defense Front, and the Unitierra movement.

These organizations informed that they will submit an amicus curiae brief, a legal mechanism by which third parties not directly involved in the proceedings provide arguments and technical or legal criteria to support a court’s decision.

The document will be included in the case in which the Court is analyzing the Reciprocal Trade Agreement between Ecuador and the United States.

Social groups argue that the agreement is not an ordinary trade pact, but rather establishes commitments of a political, military, migratory, technological, and security nature.

A press release stated that the treaty must be approved beforehand by the National Assembly because it includes political and military alliances.
