This was stated by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AU), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, at the opening of a closed-door consultation in Gabon with special representatives, high-level representatives, and permanent representatives ahead of the 17th Chairmanship Retreat on Promoting Peace, Security, and Stability in Africa, also scheduled to take place in Gabon.

Youssouf, quoted in a statement, stressed that the current global context—marked by geopolitical fragmentation, increasing strategic competition, and the weakening of multilateralism—makes it imperative that the AU strengthen its political presence both on the ground and in multilateral forums.

He advocated for stronger regional strategic frameworks, enhanced preventive diplomacy, and greater coordination with the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.

He also urged better synchronization of African diplomatic efforts in key global centers, such as Brussels, Geneva, New York, Beijing, and Cairo, where the AU maintains a presence.

Despite the financial constraints facing the Union, he reaffirmed its commitment to advancing peace, stability, and the “Silence the Guns” initiative, while ensuring that Africa has a unified and stronger voice on the world stage.

The three-day retreat, which begins tomorrow, will also include the participation of the African Union Panel of Wise Men, as well as a special session with representatives of the UN Secretary-General focused on African cooperation in peace and security.
