Cuba opens beauty workshop for people with intellectual disabilities

Havana, May 26 (Prensa Latina) A beauty workshop for students with intellectual disabilities was inaugurated in Havana with the aim of boosting their social and professional inclusion, autonomy, and skills.

The initiative is part of a joint project of the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI) and the Cuban Ministry of Education, and is based at the Ciudad Escolar Libertad (Liberty School City) in Havana.

“This space is not just an equipped classroom; it is a symbol of hope, of opportunities, and of confidence in the abilities of our students,” said Dagmara Hernandez Depestre, the center’s assistant director of work placement, at the inauguration.

B“Being the first in the country to open a workshop of this kind fills us with pride and further commits us to the mission of demonstrating that inclusive education is possible and necessary,” the teacher added.

Socio-labor inclusion means opening doors so that every young person can learn a trade, integrate into working life, and actively participate in society, he added.

The new center incorporates modern hairdressing, barbering, and manicure techniques and equipment, guaranteeing a quality education by promoting practical and creative learning in line with current trends.

This project aims to contribute to the socio-labor inclusion and empowerment of people with intellectual disabilities through training and support from educational and employment institutions.
