US blockade causes millions in losses to Cuba’s Public Health

Havana, Jun 10 (Prensa Latina) The intensified US economic blockade against Cuba caused economic losses exceeding $288 million to the public health sector between March 2024 and February 2025.

This figure is part of the more than $4.183 billion accumulated by the Cuban national health system over more than six decades as a consequence of this policy, which extends to the financial and commercial spheres.

The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Carilda Pena, explained that the situation worsened after the executive orders adopted by the administration of US President Donald Trump in 2026.

“These figures represent hospitals without resources, suspended appointments, and treatments that do not reach those who need them most,” Peña lamented during an appearance on Cuban Television.

The US blockade hits primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare levels, affecting rehabilitation processes, specialized treatments, diagnostic studies, and follow-up care for people with chronic illnesses. These services, if available, would improve the population’s quality of life, Peba stated on the radio and television program Mesa Redonda.

Washington’s hostile policy also affects the network of family doctor and nurse clinics, preventing the implementation of the healthcare plan.

The US blockade also causes power outages and difficulties in transporting supplies and resources to communities, the deputy minister added.
