Sabotage of submarine cable affects internet services in Syria

Damascus, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Telecommunications Company reported that an act of sabotage against an international submarine cable caused internet service disruptions in several provinces of the country and forced technical authorities to deploy repair efforts.

According to a statement released by the official SANA news agency, the affected cable carries data traffic between the coastal city of Tartus and Alexandria, Egypt, and was damaged near the Syrian coast, resulting in a significant loss of capacity in international connections.

The company explained that its technical teams immediately began the necessary operations to reduce the impact of the damage and restore services as quickly as possible.

However, it warned that the complexity of repairing submarine cables and the precision required for this work mean that full service restoration could take some time.

The Syrian Telecommunications Company described the incident as part of a systematic sabotage campaign targeting the national communications infrastructure, aimed at disrupting essential services and one of the country’s strategic facilities.

As of early Tuesday, Syrian authorities had not provided further information on the extent of the disruptions or the possible perpetrators of the attack.

The incident comes amid efforts by the new Syrian government to bolster security and protect strategic infrastructure.

According to official sources, the Syrian telecommunications sector has suffered for years from sabotage, looting, and neglect, factors that have significantly weakened the national communications network and hampered recovery and modernization efforts.
