According to an official statement, the identification was made possible through multidisciplinary studies conducted by the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (IMELCF), in coordination with the Attorney General’s Office, as part of investigations reopened to clarify the fate of victims of the US military operation—misnamed “Just Cause.”

The remains were recovered during exhumations carried out in January 2020 in Block 90 Bis of the Jardín de Paz Cemetery in the capital. This judicial procedure was led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office; specialists located human remains and other evidence that have since undergone scientific analysis.

The victim was the son of Francisco Carol Diaz and Eneida Ojo Perez and worked as a hydrological technician at the then-Institute of Hydraulic Resources and Electrification.

He was 32 years old when he disappeared during the early hours of December 20, 1989—the very day he was due to celebrate his 33rd birthday, the statement noted.

Following the invasion, his family undertook a long search across hospitals, morgues, detention centers, and cemeteries, without obtaining information on his whereabouts for more than three decades. With this case, the number of US invasion victims whose remains have been identified and returned—or are in the process of being returned—to their families rises to 13.
