In a statement addressed to the Guatemalan government and people, titled “Peace and well-being: we decided sovereignly in Esquipulas,” the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry recalled the historic battles for peace waged by the peoples of Central America—a process that culminated in the Esquipulas Accords of 1987.
Nicaragua recalled with gratitude and appreciation the voice of former Guatemalan President Vinicio Cerezo, as well as those of other Central American leaders who, despite differing ideological stances, defended the region’s peoples’ right to live in peace and security, with opportunities to work and prosper.
The Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry noted that voices are currently being raised that contradict their own actions regarding constitutional values and the efforts of working families across Central America.
Faced with this reality, Managua reaffirmed the need to recapture the moments of courage and merit that made the peace accords possible, and to strengthen a dignified and sovereign Central American union—one with its own voices capable of challenging what is wrong and respecting the legitimate decisions of each people. The statement emphasized that every nation must preserve its stability, harmony, and unique paths for making effective progress in the fight against poverty, free from external impositions.
“Central American brothers and sisters: from before Esquipulas, through Esquipulas, and up to the present day, the message remains the same: respect for the rights of others is peace,” it concluded.
