Nicaragua drafts constitutional reform proposals

Managua, Jul 23 (Prensa Latina) Magistrates from the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) and members of Nicaragua's National Assembly have begun preparing a new legal framework aimed at strengthening democracy and preventing foreign interference in the country's internal affairs.

The process follows directives from the Presidency of the Republic and includes a review of electoral legislation to reinforce constitutional and legal provisions regarding national electoral processes, according to the *El 19 Digital* news portal.

National Assembly President Gustavo Porras explained that the meeting marks the start of joint efforts to establish stable and secure electoral periods and procedures, in accordance with the directives of President and Head of State Daniel Ortega.

“We are all gathered here to exchange views and immediately begin the work we must carry out… under the guidance of our Commander Daniel Ortega, Head of State, who has instructed us to enact the necessary reforms,” he noted.

Porras emphasized that the goal is to ensure that elections allowing power to be wrested from the Nicaraguan people never take place in Nicaragua again.

“There will never again be elections in our country that allow power to be taken away from the Nicaraguan people, and that is something we must fully understand,” he stated.

This initial meeting was attended by members of the National Assembly’s Board of Directors—led by Porras—deputies from the Legal Affairs and Production, Economy, and Budget committees, as well as coordinators and leaders of the various political factions represented in the legislative body.

The meeting marks the starting point of a process to review and draft legal reforms aimed at consolidating an electoral system that serves the interests of the Nicaraguan people and preserves national sovereignty.
