US policy of strangling Cuba denounced in Mexico

Mexico City, Jul 27 (Prensa Latina) Mexican puppeteer Emilia Renee took to the streets of the capital carrying the Cuban flag for one reason: indignation at the fact that the United States is "strangling" the people of the Caribbean nation.

Like thousands of others—whether or not they belonged to social organizations, collectives, unions, or political parties—she participated in a massive march along sections of Paseo de la Reforma, the city’s iconic avenue, in defense of Cuba.

“On top of that, I feel angry that people say the United States is trying to save Cuba; that is a lie from start to finish,” Reneé told Prensa Latina, referring to the distortions regarding the issue that some people believe.

In her view, it must be made clear that the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by Washington on the Caribbean nation for over six decades “is what is causing the level of attrition the island is suffering.”

“I am a puppeteer, and we do our work within the artistic and cultural sphere, but there comes a point when artistic work alone is not enough to express one’s political stance, and you have to take to the streets,” she said, explaining her reason for joining the protest.

Members of more than 90 organizations marched the day before to condemn the aggressive US policy toward Cuba, in yet another demonstration that the Caribbean nation “is not alone.”

After the march concluded in front of the former US embassy in the city, organizers read a joint statement denouncing the intensification of the blockade and expressing their rejection of the threat of military aggression against the island, the targeting of the Caribbean nation’s sources of funding, and the energy blockade.
