Bolivian Cinematheque pays tribute to Jorge Sanjines

La Paz, Jul 27 (Prensa Latina) Marking the 50th anniversary of the Bolivian Cinematheque Foundation, the institution is paying tribute to Jorge Sanjines—an icon of Bolivian and Latin American cinema—during an evening event where he will be introduced by filmmaker David Wood.

Mela Marquez, executive director of the La Paz-based cultural center, told Prensa Latina that the event will feature a screening of the audiovisual piece *Aysa*, which includes behind-the-scenes footage from the making and premiere of Sanjines’ landmark film *Ukamau*.

A director, screenwriter, and theorist of Bolivian cinema, Sanjines is a pivotal figure in Latin American film.   Over the course of more than six decades, he built a body of work that transformed cinema into a space for memory, reflection, and social transformation, giving a voice to indigenous peoples and historically marginalized communities.

As the founder and leader of the Ukamau Group, Sanjines developed an artistic vision deeply rooted in the collective experiences of Andean peoples.

His concept of “cinema alongside the people” transformed the relationship between filmmaker, subjects, and audience, introducing a form of participatory creation that influenced generations of filmmakers well beyond Latin America and the Caribbean.

His most significant films include *Ukamau* (1966), *Yawar Mallku* (1969), *El Coraje del Pueblo* (1971), *La Nacion Clandestina* (1989), and *Insurgentes* (2012)—films that are now integrated to the history of New Latin American Cinema.
