Disapproval of Chilean President rises amidst emergency

Santiago, Chile, Jul 27 (Prensa Latina) Disapproval of Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast rose by two points to reach 54 percent, according to the Criteria poll conducted following a weather front that caused casualties and extensive damage.

The survey also revealed a decline in public perception regarding the government’s handling of the emergency caused by the storm.

A total of 43 out of every 100 respondents considered the Executive’s response inadequate—five points higher than in a previous measurement.

Conversely, 36 percent supported the government’s handling of the situation, while 21 percent stated they had no opinion.

The weather front, accompanied by an atmospheric river, affected the southern, central, and “Norte Chico” (near-north) regions, leaving a toll of 13 dead, 18 missing, over 13,500 people affected, and 40,000 isolated.

According to the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service, 1,600 homes were completely destroyed, more than 5,000 sustained major damage, and 27,290 suffered minor damage.

Mayors from the affected areas criticized the Executive for administrative hurdles and delays in releasing humanitarian aid, territorial neglect, delays in declaring a state of catastrophe, and failures in prevention.
