BRAZIL/CHINA Lula and Xi favor Mercosur-China agreement

Brasilia, Jul 27 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, expressed support for advancing an agreement between Mercosur and China during a telephone conversation, the Presidency's Secretariat of Social Communication reported.

The conversation addressed deepening the strategic partnership between the two countries, as well as coordination on regional and international issues, the statement added.

The Brazilian leader also reaffirmed his country’s commitment to diversifying markets and trade partners, particularly in light of the imposition of US tariffs on various products from Brazil.

Lula noted that both governments reiterated their aim to expand cooperation in strategic and high-tech areas, including artificial intelligence, satellites, critical mineral processing, and the fertilizer trade.

The conversation also provided an opportunity to review the alignment of national development strategies and the performance of the bilateral economic relationship, with trade volume reaching record levels in recent years.

On the international stage, Lula and Xi advocated for strengthening multilateralism and analyzed major global challenges, such as armed conflicts and the need for more effective governance to address current political, humanitarian, and economic crises.

For his part, Xi expressed China’s support for Brazil in defending its sovereignty and rejecting any form of external interference, while also reaffirming Beijing’s readiness to strengthen bilateral and multilateral coordination.
