In an interview with the Syrian state channel Al-Ikhbariya, following a three-day visit to the country, Guterres affirmed that Syria needs broad support from UN agencies and the international community to assist internally displaced persons and advance reconstruction efforts.
The UN chief pledged to make every effort to mobilize resources for the country and pointed out that some sanctions remain in place and must be lifted, in addition to providing concrete financial support to the Syrian government.
He said, “My return to Syria is an important occasion for me, especially seeing that the country is moving in the right direction.”
The secretary-general described the talks held with President Ahmad al-Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, and other officials as positive.
The UN chief described these violations as unacceptable and affirmed that they cause unnecessary suffering to the Syrian population, while the UN continues to monitor compliance with the agreement.
