Protests in Brazil demand criminalization of misogyny

Brasilia, Aug 3 (Prensa Latina) At least 19 Brazilian cities hosted protests demanding that the Chamber of Deputies vote on a bill that equates misogyny with the crime of racism and stiffens penalties for this type of violence.

The demonstrations, organized by the *Levante Mulheres Vivas* (Rise Up, Living Women) movement, took place in Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Joao Pessoa, Boa Vista, Campo Grande, and other state capitals and municipalities across the country, according to the *Brasil de Fato* news portal.

This initiative aims to pressure the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta, to include Bill (PL) 896/2023—which was granted fast-track status in July—on the legislative agenda for August.

The proposal, already passed by the Senate, amends Law 7.716 of 1989 to include misogyny among crimes involving discrimination and prejudice.

The text establishes prison sentences of two to five years for those who commit, induce, or incite acts of violence, restrict the full exercise of rights, or violate a person’s dignity based on their status as a woman.

It also adds “status as a woman” as an aggravating circumstance for the crime of discriminatory insult.

Ripani said that the proposal’s goal is not to limit freedom of speech, but to criminalize conduct that encourages or promotes crimes against women—particularly in digital environments, where content normalizing sexual violence and other forms of aggression is disseminated.
