Biodegradable cosmetic face masks developed in Russia

Moscow, Aug 5 (Prensa Latina) Researchers at South Ural State University in Russia have developed a biodegradable base for cosmetic face masks, the multinational channel TVBrics reported.

According to the report, the new technology—made from natural components—decomposes into compost within three weeks, and prototypes are already being prepared for experimental testing.

Unlike conventional textile masks, which are not recyclable and have an environmental impact, this new product is made using an innovative combination of natural ingredients.

Project director Oxana Zinina, a professor in the Department of Food Technology and Biotechnology at the aforementioned Ural university, explained that the biodegradable base allows for the incorporation of various active ingredients to create masks with different properties.

Compounds already evaluated include lactic acid, chamomile extract, aloe vera, various vegetable oils, and vitamins, making it possible to produce items with moisturizing or nourishing effects depending on the chosen formulation.

The researchers highlight that the technology’s main innovation lies in the combination of agar-agar, sodium alginate, and collagen hydrolysate—a formulation previously unseen on the Russian market.

The project is currently in an intermediate stage of development. After finalizing the functional formulations, the team will conduct experimental trials and complete the safety certification process prior to potential commercialization.
