Iran conditions reopening of Hormuz when US threats end

Tehran, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) The Strait of Hormuz will remain closed as long as US threats against Iran and the maritime blockade imposed on Tehran continue, Behnam Saeedi, secretary of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, affirmed.

Speaking to the Young Journalists Club, connected to state television, Saeedi explained that the recent talks between Iran and Oman were limited to defining mechanisms and routes for ship navigation through the strategic waterway.

The official clarified that the understanding reached with Muscat does not imply the general reopening of the strait.

The legislator stated, “The issue of the Strait of Hormuz will be discussed when the United States ends its threats and the maritime blockade, withdraws from the region, and the war is declared over.”

He noted that under the current circumstances, there are no reasons to allow the full opening of the maritime passage.

Saeedi added that Iran will not accept US intervention or a US presence in the strait and urged Oman to consider this position during the negotiations.

Tehran and Washington reached an agreement on June 14, mediated by Pakistan, the first phase of which envisioned the reopening of Hormuz in exchange for the release of frozen Iranian assets.
