Nicaraguan Caribbean regions back constitutional reforms

Managua, Aug 7 (Prensa Latina) Representatives from Nicaragua's Caribbean Coast autonomous regions expressed their support for partial reforms to the Political Constitution, deeming that they will strengthen the democracy of the "People-President."

During consultation sessions held by the National Assembly’s Special Constitutional Commission, they stated that the initiative would ensure the continuity of progress achieved regarding autonomy, development, and the restoration of rights.

The coordinator of the Secretariat for Caribbean Coast Affairs, Commander Lumberto Campbell, affirmed that the reforms constitute a mechanism to safeguard the achievements made in recent years.

Campbell remembered that, following Co-President Daniel Ortega’s directive to establish a “dike” to prevent setbacks in the country, he interpreted that call as a need to protect the rights secured by the autonomous regions.

“To speak of a setback regarding the Caribbean Coast is to speak of exclusion. In the past, we coastal residents didn’t even exist; legally, we were not included in the Constitution of the Republic of Nicaragua. Over these 19 years, we have experienced a transformation from darkness to light,” he stated.

The official highlighted that this process has been made possible by an environment of stability, security, and peace—conditions that, he noted, enabled the advancement of development within Caribbean communities.

Meanwhile, Carlos Aleman, coordinator of the North Caribbean Coast Regional Government, stated that support for the initiative—promoted by Co-Presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo—also seeks to strengthen the Nicaraguan State and the legal framework guiding the development of the autonomous regions.
