Italian wave of solidarity heads to Cuba for Fidel’s centenary

Rome, Aug 7 (Prensa Latina) An Italian wave of solidarity is currently arriving in Cuba, featuring political, social, and youth delegations that—under the slogan "100 Years with Fidel Castro"—are assisting the Cuban people and will celebrate the centenary of the Cuban leader's birth.

Members of the “Red de los Comunistas” (Communist Network), the “Potere al Popolo” (Power to the People) party, and left-wing youth organizations such as “Cambiare Rotta” and “Oposición Estudiantil de Alternativa” are departing for the island in successive waves, alongside activists from the “Let Cuba Breathe” campaign and representatives from many other groups.

They are united by the shared goal of supporting the Cuban government and people at a time when it is more important than ever to break down the wall of the U.S. blockade—which seeks to strangle the country’s economy and daily life—and to show the world that “Cuba is not alone,” according to a report published by the newspaper *Il Faro di Roma*.

“We are once again heading to Cuba with a convoy organized as part of the Fidel Castro centenary, carrying with us medicines collected over recent months and offering full support to the government, the people, and the Cuban revolutionary process,” states a message posted on social media by *Poder al Pueblo*.

“Following Fidel’s example, we respond to imperialism with solidarity and struggle, building a socialist alternative against a world of barbarism,” the note adds, referencing the upcoming March 13th commemoration of the centenary of the Cuban Revolution’s historic leader’s birth.

Internationalist solidarity is reaching the Caribbean nation “as a tangible sign,” even as the U.S. blockade “continues to tighten its grip on the Cuban economy, exacerbating the population’s daily hardships and making access to essential goods increasingly difficult,” reports *Il Faro di Roma*.

The humanitarian aid collected in Italy in recent weeks to support Cuba “is the result of an unceasing mobilization” and will be delivered in the coming days by delegation members, “who will participate in events organized for the centenary of Fidel’s birth,” the report adds.
