Cuba prepares extensive cultural program for Fidel’s centenary

Camaguey, Cuba, Aug 7 (Prensa Latina) Camaguey will dedicate an extensive series of cultural, artistic, and community activities to the centenary of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro—a program designed to project his legacy to new generations.

The celebrations, centered around August 13, will combine productive initiatives, forums for reflection, and artistic expressions conceived as an opportunity to revitalize the Commander-in-Chief’s mark on national culture, within an agenda that will extend over the coming months.

Armando Perez, president of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) in Camaguey, highlighted that the organization will focus much of its effort on this commemoration, deeming it impossible to separate the country’s artistic and intellectual development from the influence exerted by Fidel Castro. “We cannot ignore what he did in the artistic and intellectual realm, always alongside the revolutionary process,” he stated.

The UNEAC headquarters will host a wide-ranging program of events in collaboration with the Association of Veterants of the Cuban Revolution, featuring visual arts exhibitions, meetings with creators, and other activities that will link—from August 13 to 22—with the celebrations marking the organization’s own anniversary.

These initiatives will also reach other cultural venues across the province. As explained by Ivan Lorea of the Provincial Directorate of Culture, the schedule includes activities in libraries, exhibitions, performances at the Contemporary Ballet headquarters, as well as book presentations and poetry recitals at the Revolution Square Protocol Hall—all inspired by the figure of Fidel Castro.

The calendar will extend beyond the provincial capital to reach the municipalities with a special artistic gala dedicated to the revolutionary leader and numerous community activities, aligning with the goal of bringing cultural heritage and Fidel’s ideas closer to audiences of different generations. The day’s events will also feature children’s folk gatherings and the *Cantata Escenica: Centenario* (Scenic Cantata: Centenary), prepared by the Camaguey Folkloric Ballet.

Its director, Fernando Echemendia, noted that “thanks to Fidel’s tremendous effort, we were able to see barefoot dancers catapulted onto the major stage,” referring to the support the historic leader provided to the Cuban dance movement.
